Northern Viking Jewelry® "925 Ukko's Hammer Eearrings By Johan Thorolf
Ukko’s Hammer:
Ukko’s Hammer or Axe is a very powerful Finnish symbol. It is also the Finnish counterpart to the Scandinavian Thor’s Hammer. Ukko, the supreme deity, used his weapon to administer justice and create lightning bolts. Ukko’s hammer can be a symbol for many things: with the edge turned downwards, it resembles a boat; with the edge turned upwards, it looks like a hammer; and horizontally it resembles an axe.
The moon is shining brightly in a dark blue sky. The ferns are swaying in the wind. The wanderers are deep in the dark forest, among age-old oaks and pines. Suddenly, their leader halts and raises his hands in the air. The wanderers stop, and the sound of their footsteps ceases. Only the hooting of an owl is heard somewhere in the night. A man creeps by ferns. He touches the trunk of a broken tree. He raises his eyes towards the treetop which looks as black as charcoal. He circles the tree, caressing the bark with his hands and feeling the deep grooves in the rough surface. The man bends down and examines the grooves revealed by the moonlight: “Ukko’s hammer. He’s been here.” Suddenly, flames issue from the grooves. An enormous boom is heard in the distance and a flash is seen in the night sky. The shadowy woodland and the fells looming behind it are revealed.
